This article will help you in several possible habits and how i stopped them.

Why Does My Dog Sleep On My Head In Bed?

It’s true! Dogs are very sensitive & simply want a comfortable place to snooze, this isn’t the sole reason for this behaviour.

I play with my pet dog all the time. These make an habit for dogs, he recognises how you love and care about the dog. As we know the dogs are most loyal pet. The love, affection and attachment with pet leads to walk or sleep beside you.

Why Does My Dog Sleep By My Head?

Dog feels more safer when they're with the person he loves. Dogs have some separation anxiety, & being protective or you might have reinforced the behaviour by rewarding when he does the things. They remember how you treat him.

There are several reasons why dogs do it and it can be due to a multiple reasons. However, i sort out certain things and consider trying to figure out the exact reason.

Why My Dog Sleeps By My Head

The various reasons which i find why my dog sleeps by my head will likely come with some of these.

Dog Feel More Secure

We know dogs evolved as pack animals. So i find it natural for them to want to be around me and other people in surrounding. Dogs feels safer especially if they do it at night with their owner.

Inadvertently Reinforced This Sleeping Behavior

If you reward the things which you like of your pet dog, he will do it for you again and again. This cause can be that you have been rewarding the behaviour. If i give things to my dog such as balls to play or pay extra attention when he tries to sleep by my head then he might be doing it more to get more rewards.

Remember if you want to get it stop, then stop rewarding him.

Dog Separation Anxiety

Dog gets addicted to you, he doesn't know how to stay away from you, he is afraid of losing you. They might having some separation anxiety. It is good as early as you teach dog to learn what to do and where to sleep.

If you teach early the dog will learn early. If this dog sleeping on your head habit get worse or you might giving him chance to sleep with you, then this will some what difficult to get away of dog. You can not even move without noticing by him!

Dog Protective Behaviour

My dog is protective towards me. Dogs are loyal and protect you from harm. He gets overprotective when other people are around you. My dog want to sleep next to me to protect me from danger.

It is common every dog protect their owner and want love from their owner.

Dog knows that the head is the most vulnerable part. They choose to sleep next to your head as a way of keeping you safe from any harm that may befall you while sleeping.

Dog Feels Cozy and Comfortable

I spend a lot of time with my pet dog. As my behaviour towards my pet dog, my love and affection towards dog feels him more cozy and comfortable.

Other reason, is some of the dogs having smaller breeds with fewer hairs, the body heat of you gives when your closed to dogs makes the bed more comfortable place to sleep.

My pet dog want the close comfort of me when his anxious. But mostly, it is believe  that this is the leaning sign of affection.

So, it is important to note that dogs are pack animals who from the time of their birth sleep snuggled against their littermates. This habit stays till he learn the new things.

How To Get Your Dog To Stop Sleeping By Your Head

Below are some useful options. I try this on my pet dog to stop sleeping by my head hope this will help you too. Making use of a few of them will likely work best.

Train Dog To Sleep In Designated Sleeping Spot

I train my dog to sleep in his designated spot. By do this when my dog will able to redirect to sleep in a different spot when it seems like it is about to come and sleep by your head. Doing this will also help to get it out of the habit of doing it again and again.

I always use positive reinforcement training to train my dog to sleep somewhere else. You should train your dog to lay down in a certain spot and then gradually train it to stay there for a long and longer time.

This will help him to learn to sleep at designated place at night.

Take Steps To Reduce Dog's Separation Anxiety

If you leave your pet alone they get anxiety. To reduce these anxiety make sure you follow the steps given below like i do.

To do this you can do as follows:

I make it seem like about to leave by doing something such as picking up my keys
I reward my pet dog for not being anxious and repeat these several times
Make more moves towards actually leaving such as by picking up the keys and putting your hand on the door handle
Reward my dog for not being anxious and repeat the process some times
Open the door and i go outside for a few moments then come back and reward my dog
Repeat the above, each time staying outside for slightly longer than before

Avoid Negatively Reinforcing Behavior But Reward It When He Does The Right Thing

As i mentioned above, it can be the case that dog has learned to sleep by your head because it gets things that it wants when it does it.

Instead of rewarding my dog when he does things, i try to reward it when he does not do it and to redirect it to sleep somewhere else when my dog tries to sleep by my head.

Make Its Sleeping Environment Comfortable

It will even help to make the area i choose for my dog to sleep in comfortable to encourage it to sleep there more. To do this i make sure the room is cool, not too
bright at night and that there is a space for it to lay down.

Final Verdict

Dog wants a soft and warm spot to sleep, or they just need to be around you all of the time, there are things you can do about it.
Make sure you to give lovely name to your pet.

A few good practices around the house can often quickly change this behaviour, but all in all, it is not something to fear and does not typically indicate anything physically wrong with your dog.

Training my pet dog to sleep in its bed isn’t always easy. But with positive reinforcement and smart strategies, it’s possible to train healthy sleep habits early on.
